In July this year whilst in the middle of the Covid pandemic, we at A Squared applied to be recognised as Living Wage employers.
We finally received our accreditation in September this year along with a goody bag of promotional material shown below, but what does it all mean and why did we sign up?
The real Living Wage is the only UK wage rate that is voluntarily paid by nearly 6,000 UK businesses who believe their staff deserve a fair day’s pay for a hard day’s work. These employers pay the real Living Wage which is higher than the government minimum.
In 2016 the government introduced the National Living Wage – and although the Foundation welcomed this pay rise for low-paid workers, it is not a Living Wage as it isn’t calculated based on actual living costs.
Over 180,000 employees have received a pay rise as a result of the Living Wage campaign and the foundation enjoys cross-party support. They have a broad range of employers accredited with the Foundation including 1/3 of the FTSE 100 and big household names including ITV, GOOGLE, IKEA, Everton FC and Chelsea FC. Now we are proud to add our name to this distinguished list of companies!
Even from the very beginning of A Squared, founder Alan Bach already had the ethos of “a fair day’s wage for a fair day’s work” and have always believed in paying our hard working staff above the minimum wage. When we saw the requirements to be accredited with being Living Wage employers we jumped at the chance as we were already exceeding the recommended salary guideline.
Our Managing Director, Kate, looks to reward hard work and commitment with more than just financial rewards though as you can see from visiting our Facebook page here. From staff nights out to cakes and treats for special occasions we always know our contribution to the business is appreciated and recognised.
In September we finally received our welcome pack containing the plaque, bag, various stickers and pens, so we have used these as modeled below by Lyn to promote our accreditation among our team. This raises the awareness of the Foundation and lets staff know their salary is in line with the real cost of living and exceeds what the Government recommends as both the minimum wage and National living wage.

Although these are worrying times for many employers, we know that staff morale is vitally important and providing them with a wage that is not just fair but enough to truly live on has a massive impact on this. It is something we at A Squared Technologies are immensely proud to be recognised as providing and we aim to keep our salaries in line with the foundation going forward.
November 9th to the 15th is Living Wage week 2020 and we will be looking to do more to promote our accreditation among our staff and through various social media channels so watch this space!
